摘要:Intramedullary nailing is a standard treatment for adult long bone frac-ture. Previous numerous animal, biomechanical and clinical studies have documented the short-term performance of the intramedullary nails; however, the long-term influ-ence of the nails on the change of bone density distribution is still not fully understood. According to bone remodeling theory, a set of computational algorithms was implemented in the finite element model to predict the bone density distribution for retained in-tramedullary nail. The bone density was recorded to observe the progression of remodel-ing. The results show that the effect of intramedullary nail on the Gruen zone 4 and 5 of femur is small, while the effect on the Gruen zone 1, 2 and 6 is greater than other zones. This simulation indicates that intramedullary nail plays a significant role in the long-term bone density distribution after surgery.
