2025 Yushu MW7.1 Earthquake in Dingri, Tibet: A Typical Normal Fault-type Earthquake
Abstract:The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is caused by the continuous collision between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, not only becoming the third highest region in the world, but also becoming one of the regions with the most intense crustal movements, the most developed active faults, and the most frequent large earthquakes, as well as a natural museum of different types of earthquake relics. Since 2000, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has experienced several large earthquakes, such as the MW7.8 Kekexili earthquake in 2001, the MW7.1 Yutian earthquake in the West Kunlun in 2008, the MW7.9 Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, the MW7.8 Nepal earthquake in 2015, and the MW7.3 Maduo earthquake in 2021, as well as multiple earthquakes with magnitudes close to MW7, such as the MW6.9 Yushu earthquake in 2010 and the MW6.6 Menyuan earthquake in 2022. Among them, earthquakes occurring at the periphery of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have caused huge casualties and property losses, while the 2001 Kekexili earthquake and the 2008 Yutian earthquake, located in the remote areas of the plateau, had very light disaster losses.
