The Role of Active Cycle of Breathing Technique in Pulmonary Rehabilitation for Elderly Patients with Severe Pneumonia
Abstract:Objective: To explore the effect of Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT) on pulmonary rehabilitation in elderly patients with severe pneumonia. Methods: A total of 86 elderly patients with severe pneumonia admitted to Zhumadian Second Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from September 2022 to September 2024 were selected as the study subjects. They were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group using a random number table, with 43 cases in each group. The control group received conventional pulmonary rehabilitation, while the observation group received ACBT in addition to the conventional treatment. The changes in blood gas analysis indicators, lung function, and quality of life before and after intervention were compared between the two groups. Results: After intervention, the PaO2/FiO2 ratio and PaO2 of the observation group were higher than those of the control group, while the PaCO2 was lower, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After intervention, the forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and FEV1 of the observation group were higher than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After intervention, the scores for activity limitation, disease impact, respiratory symptoms, and total score of the observation group were lower than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Conclusion: ACBT can improve blood gas analysis indicators and lung function in elderly patients with severe pneumonia, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
