Development of a self-management behavior questionnaire for Chinese hemodialysis patients
Abstract:BACKGROUND: Self-management behavior is very important to hemodialysis(HD) patients. There are few studies about self-management behavior of Chinese hemodialysis patients. To develop an effective and reliable self-management behavior questionnaire of HD is very necessary.OBJECTIVE: To develop a self-management behavior questionnaire for Chinese hemodialysis patients, and verify its reliability and validity.DESIGN: Sampling investigation in the First and the Second Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, the Central and the Second Hospital of Shenyang Medical College.METHODS: Questionnaire was made based on the definition of hemodialysis patients' self-management behavior. After 5 dialysis nurses and 10hemodialysis patients performing evaluation of the content validity and face validity, 4 sub-questionnaires were constructed with 59 items were used to measure self-management behavior of 120 hemodialysis patients.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Cronbach's α coefficient was used to test internal consistency reliability; factor analysis test construct validity;daily weight gain, predialysis serum potassium, serum phosphorus, and shortening behavior, skipping behavior of HD test criterion-related validity of the questionnaire.RESULTS: Totally 107 questionnaires were available. Four factors were extracted by using principal factor analysis and varimax rotation, and 25 items were selected. The structure of the questionnaire was basically based on the initial designed structure. The internal consistency was supported by Cronbach's α coefficient of 0. 814. Testing of criterion-related validity found daily weight gain was negatively associated with self-management behavior and significantly negatively associated with the behavior of restriction of liquid, ion and management behavior in quantity of food.CONCLUSION: The self-management behavior questionnaire is reliable, valid and practical. It provides a tool for researchers to evaluate and intervene in the self-management behavior of HD patients.
