Clinical significance of ALDH1 expression in breast cancer:a Meta analysis

Abstract：Objective To systematically review the expression and clinical significance of ALDH 1 in breast cancer. Methods Searches in the databases such as PubMed , Web of Knowledge, CBM, CNKI and Wanfang Data were performed to collect case-control studies about the association between the ALDH 1 expression and breast cancer.Reviewers independently screened the literature according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria , extracted the data, and assessed the methodological quality of the included studies, and then RevMan 5.2 soft ware was used for meta analysis.Results Nine case-control studies involving 615 patients were included.The results of the meta-analyses showed that there was significant difference of ALDH 1 expression in the following comparison : breast cancer tissues vs.normal breast tissues (OR =12.90, 95% CI 7.28 to 22.86, P <0.01),Histological gradeⅠ-Ⅱvs.Histological grade Ⅲ (OR =0.31,95% CI 0.20 to 0.49, P <0.01).There was sig-nificant difference of ALDH1 positive patients had low 5-year overall survival compared with ALDH1-negative patients(OR =0.23,95% CI 0.10 to 0.49, P =0.000 2).While no significant difference was found in clinical stage , tumor size, lymph node metastasis,menopausal status and HER-2 status.Conclusion Higher ALDH1 expression might be associated with breast cancer, its histological grade, and low 5-year overall survival.It can be used as a factor in judging the prognosis of breast cancer.
