Diagnosis and Treatment Report of Two Cases of Surfer's Myelopathy and Literature Review
Abstract:Surfer's myelopathy (SM) is relatively rare in clinical practice and is easily misdiagnosed or missed. This study analyzes and summarizes the diagnostic and treatment process of two SM patients at Hainan Hospital, Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital, and reviews relevant literature at home and abroad. The diagnosis of SM mainly relies on a history of hyperextension of the spine, symptoms and signs of paraplegia or mild paraplegia, and abnormal findings on spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment primarily involves the use of glucocorticoids for anti-inflammatory effects and dehydration to reduce spinal cord edema, improve spinal cord perfusion, and provide symptomatic supportive treatment such as neurotrophic therapy and functional rehabilitation. Sharing this rare case and reviewing related literature will help clinicians identify it early and provide standardized treatment, reducing misdiagnosis and improper treatment.
