The Evolution of Understanding Gestational Hyperglycemia
Abstract:Gestational hyperglycemia includes pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM), including type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus combined with pregnancy, prediabetes [including impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)], and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) (defined as new-onset glucose metabolism abnormalities during pregnancy in women who were previously normoglycemic). It is the most common complication during pregnancy, seriously endangering maternal and fetal health and imposing a heavy burden on China's healthcare economy [1-3]. Accurate diagnosis, management, and prevention of gestational hyperglycemia can effectively improve both short-term and long-term outcomes for mothers and infants, and it is of great significance for the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in the long term.
