The Relationship between Glycemic Control and Quality of Life in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Mediation Analysis of Self-Regulatory Fatigue
Abstract:Objective: To explore the mediating effect of self-regulatory fatigue on the relationship between glycemic control and quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes, providing reference for improving their quality of life. Methods: A convenience sampling method was used to select 187 patients with type 2 diabetes admitted to our hospital from July 2021 to December 2023. The patients were surveyed using a general information collection questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Self-Regulatory Fatigue Scale, and the Diabetes-specific Quality of Life Scale. Results: The scores of self-regulatory fatigue and quality of life in 187 patients with type 2 diabetes were (50.08±9.91) points and (84.82±15.98) points, respectively, with a glycosylated hemoglobin level of (7.15±1.38)%. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the self-regulatory fatigue score was positively correlated with glycosylated hemoglobin (r=0.253, P<0.001) and quality of life score (r=0.489, P<0.001), and glycosylated hemoglobin was also positively correlated with quality of life score (r=0.216, P<0.001). Self-regulatory fatigue had a partial mediating effect between glycemic control and quality of life, with the mediation effect accounting for 47.59% of the total effect. Conclusion: The level of self-regulatory fatigue in patients with type 2 diabetes is moderate to slightly above average, while the quality of life is moderate to slightly below average. Self-regulatory fatigue acts as a mediating variable in the relationship between glycemic control and quality of life. Glycemic control not only directly affects the quality of life but also indirectly influences it through self-regulatory fatigue. Clinically, nursing staff can improve patients' glycemic control, reduce their self-regulatory fatigue, and enhance their quality of life.
