Abstract:Objective: To investigate the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene C677T polymorphism and its relationship with plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels in patients with H-type hypertension among Han and Hui ethnic groups in the Lanzhou area. Methods: A total of 179 Han patients and 104 Hui patients diagnosed with H-type hypertension in the Department of Cardiology of our hospital from July 2021 to August 2022 were selected. Additionally, 65 Han patients and 38 Hui patients with non-H-type hypertension were also included. Plasma Hcy, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and other indicators were measured, and the MTHFR C677T genotype was determined and statistically analyzed. Results: There were statistically significant differences in the distribution frequency of MTHFR C677T genotypes and allele frequencies between Han and Hui populations with H-type hypertension in the Lanzhou area (P < 0.05). The TT genotype distribution frequency was higher in patients with H-type hypertension compared to those without H-type hypertension (P < 0.05). The frequency of the TT genotype was higher in Han patients than in Hui patients (P < 0.05). In both Han and Hui H-type hypertension groups, patients with the TT genotype had significantly higher Hcy levels compared to those with CC or CT genotypes (P < 0.05). Conclusion: There are ethnic differences in the MTHFR gene C677T polymorphism in patients with H-type hypertension among Han and Hui populations in the Lanzhou area, and it is closely related to plasma Hcy expression.
